The East Village - The Evolution of a Neighborhood

Duration

clock3 hours

Overview

New York's neighborhoods are always evolving - it's part of what makes the city so fascinating. Manhattan's East Village is a perfect example of this evolution.

Experience the neighborhood's diverse history, culture, and of course cuisine! The East Village has undergone tremendous changes over the decades - and you will learn all about it (and taste local fare along the way)!

In the mid-1600's the area was coined Peter Stuveysant’s “bouwerie” (meaning “farm” in Dutch). Then in the mid 1800's the area became a hot spot for immigrant from all corners of the world. In the 1960s and 70s the area became a mecca for “Hippies” looking to express themselves. Now it's the place for people to be whoever they want to be.

We wend our way through this ever-changing enclave and experience many “offbeat” surprises - “the healthiest block in NYC”, “little Japan”, home of the Yiddish theatre (later was known for its punk rock scene), neighborhood gardens, the memorial to the Slocum Disaster & more.
