Overview

The ancient Greek colony dedicated to the god Poseidon still remains intact today with its monumental temples, the amphitheater and the cobbled streets. An ancient legend tells that Jason, at the head of the Argonauts expedition, stopped at the mouth of the Sele where he founded a sanctuary in honor of Hera. It is here that, across the river, Greek colonists from Sybaris founded Poseidonia around 600 BC. The guided tour starts from the archaeological area to visit the temples, the square intended for political and commercial activities, the amphitheater, some shops and homes. We will continue the visit in the Archaeological Museum, to retrace the history of the Greek city through the finds kept inside, including architectural materials from temples, Greek vases decorated with mythological episodes, but above all the famous Tomb of the Diver dating back to 470 BC, document exceptional for its uniqueness.
