Overview

Side-by-side with the churches, palaces and streets that form the dense urban fabric of Naples, a parallel hidden city unravels; composed of archaeological remains, crypts filled with skulls, splendid cloisters, streets and tunnels spanning centuries carved into the soft tufa volcanic rock. We will commence our voyage to uncover this beguiling - yet often neglected - side of Naples from Via dei Tribunali. Here we will come across the Forum's monumental ruins which remain in the subterranean sections of the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore. After a pause at the underground cemetery of the church devoted to souls in Purgatory, we will proceed towards Santa Chiara Monastery constructed in the fourteenth century on top of Roman baths. Then we will investigate Via San Gregorio Armeno; a renowned street exclusively offering shops selling masterfully crafted “presepe” cribs as well as Spaccanapoli – an old road that traverses through downtown.
