Top attractions include the Catedral Primada de América, the first cathedral in America, and the Alcazar de Colón, the former residence of Christopher Columbus's son. Other attractions include the Dominican Convent, the first monastery in the Americas, and Ozama Fortress, the oldest fortress in the New World. The Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo also has beautiful parks and squares. Parque Colón, in front of the cathedral, is the perfect place to take a break and people watch. Plaza de España is a huge square with some of the best restaurants in the area.
