What a President Tells His Gardener - A White House Neighborhood Tour

Duration

clock1 hour 10 minutes

Overview

This is an interactive walk and talk with an historical figure (a professional actor/interpreter) who actually worked at the White House and is intimately familiar with the early presidents and the times in which they lived. Most of our early presidents were farmers so gardens at the White House were naturally expected. John Ousley, the first White House gardener (1825 to1852), not only tended these gardens but became a close confidant with several of our early presidents, John Quincy Adams in particular. With great respect and grace Mr. Ousley takes time from his chores and shares some of his memories and stories with walk guests as together they stroll the President's Neighborhood.

Please Note: The walk does not go into the White House or onto the White House grounds.
