Overview

Xian is a jewel in the crown of China's great ancient capitals, possessing a wealth of cultural and historical treasures waiting to be uncovered. In a city so imbued in history, it’s hard to know what to see. The Terracotta Army which was discovered by local farmers digging water well in 1974 is the most important historical discovery of modern China and one of the most significant archaeological excavations and cultural discoveries of the twentieth century in the world. As the symbol of Xian, the City Wall of Xian was built in 1387 and it is the best-preserved ancient city wall still standing in China. It is also the largest and most intact ancient city wall structures in the world. Towering 64 meters (210 feet) over Xian's southern area, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda has been the landmark of Xian for over 1300 years since it was built in 652AD. It was built to house sutras and relics brought back from India by one of China's most famous monks, translators and travelers, Master Xuanzang.
