Alaska is the biggest state in the United States based on the area of the land it occupies, spanning almost 670 square miles. It has a population of just over 700,000 people. This makes the population density a fraction over one person per square mile and the most sparsely populated state in the United States of America. It is situated at the extreme north west of the continent bordered by Canada to the east and the Arctic Ocean and Pacific Ocean to the north and west respectively. Around half of the people living in Alaska live within the limits of the Anchorage metropolitan. The name Alaska is derived from an Aleut word meaning ?the mainland? and the native locals know it as Alyeska. Alaska?s coastline is longer than all the other states in the United States combined and is the only non-contiguous state on the main Continent.

Alaska has an oceanic climate in the south and a subarctic climate towards the northern reaches of the state which means the temperatures can change between extreme cold and extreme heat. The wettest areas of Alaska can average over 275 inches of rainfall annually and only Juneau experiences an average temperature of above freezing during the winter. Anchorage is milder than most of Alaska due to its proximity to the coast and experiences more snow than the rest of the state. Towards the northern extremes of Alaska the climate is subarctic with the average low temperature being just 1.1 degrees Celsius.

Alaska has several large tourist attractions which make visiting it an attractive option for foreigners. In Anchorage you can visit the Alaska Native Heritage Centre and learn about the cultures of the native people. For the outdoor types, a trip to the Denali National park offers mountain peaks where wildlife like Dall sheep, wolves and moose can be seen. It also has some great hiking trails. The Kenai Fjords National Park is another popular destination and contains one of the largest ice fields in the United States.
