Beijing Capital International Airport is located around 30KM northeast of the city centre of Beijing in the Shunyi district of the city. At the time of its construction, the airport was located in the midst of rolling countryside, however over the past few years, as China?s economic miracle has happened, it has now been overtaken by the city sprawl, and is surrounded by factories and homes. The airport was extensively modernised for the 2008 Olympics, and as such is one of the easiest airports to negotiate in the world.
Before driving in China, you will need to arrange for a special permit to extend your licence and allow you to take to the roads in the country. Driving in the cities can be difficult at times because the roads in places such as Beijing or Shanghai, where the roads are crowded at rush hour are not really intended to carry the volume of traffic that comes into the country. Outside the cities, China?s infrastructure is fairly good, although the signs are not multi lingual, so having some kind of Sat Nav is useful to help you find your way.
Car hire at Beijing International Airport is limited to just a few companies, but is available in all 3 Terminal s. The desks are all in the arrivals halls of the Terminal buildings, just after the baggage reclaim areas. Car hire from Budget , BCC Rental, Sixt , and Hertz is available at the airport.
To get to capital International Airport from the centre of Beijing, you should first head north towards the Dongcheng region where you will pass over the Dongzhimen Bridge. Once over the bridge, you should get onto the Airport Expressway and follow the signposts for the airport. You will pass over a number of large bridges and travel through the town of Wuyuan before the road turns due north and enters the airport grounds. You can pass through customs outside the airport if you prefer, although you will still need to do the same process inside the airport.
The most up to date information about Beijing Capital International Airport is available online at en.bcia.com.cn, which is available in most languages including English. From within China, you can make a phone call to the airport switchboard on 010-64541100, where you will be able to access information about most airport services 24 hours a day.
