The Republic of Kenya is a country on the east coast of Africa and considered part of the ‘Horn of Africa’. The Kenyan capital is Nairobi and the currency is the Kenyan shilling. The country was originally named after Mount Kenya, which is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa, after Kilimanjaro.

Kenya became a British colony in 1890, when Germany handed its coastal holdings in East Africa to Britain. Britain held onto Kenya until it declared its independence in 1963 and declared itself a Republic in 1964. During that time a great amount of infrastructure was built, including the important Kenya-Uganda railway line, which provided a lot of trade.

The Kenyan economy is a strong one, being market-based and liberalised. Because of this the country is seen as the hub for financial and communication services in Eastern and Central Africa. The Kenyan economy is expected to grow year on year for the next few years, as the country goes from strength to strength.

Kenya has a great tradition in the field of long-distance athletics and has consistently produced Olympic quality athletics in great quantities, such as Paul Tergat and John Ngugi, who have both claimed major marathon titles and world records. Elsewhere Kenya also participates Internationally in the sport of cricket. It’s the most successful team sport in Kenya and the National team has reached the finals of the Cricket World Cup every year since 1996, with the team getting the semi-finals of the 2003 event.

In terms of tourism the main attractions in the country are the scenery of the Great Rift Valley, Mount Kenya and some of the views of Mount Kilimanjiro. As well as Nairobi the second city of Mombasa is also renowned as a tourist destination that’s a little less packed.
