Montreux is a town in the Swiss district of Riviera-Pays-d’Enhaut, which is in the canton of Vaud. The town is located at the foot of the Alps and is located on the north-east shore of Lake Geneva, with nearly 25,000 residents. Being in Switzerland the currency is the Swiss Franc and many different languages are spoken; including French, German and Italian.
Due to the town’s location near Italy it was an important settlement for the Romans, especially since it was close to their capital of Aventicum and Gaul. Because of this the town grew as a sort of ‘overspill’ to Aventicum. It was around the 19th century that tourism really started to become the main industry on which the local economy was based, with winter sports being especially important.
Aside from skiing the town also hosts the annual Septembre musical de Montreux festival, which showcases the best in local and National
music and has been held every year since 1946. There is also the Montreux Jazz Festival, another annual festival held in July, which is known throughout the jazz world. The town was recognised for its preservation of its heritage in the early 1990s, when it was given the Wakker Prize for architectural heritage. Just by walking through the streets you will be able to see why it was given this award.
The climate in Montreux, as expected, is Alpine, with it very close to the Alps. This means a lot of snow in the winter, and temperatures as low as -2C in December and January. In the summer temperatures peak at around 25C, however these highs are very rare and the average is usually around 20C.
