Best Car Rental Narbonne

Narbonne is a commune in the Languedoc-Roussillon region of southern France. Located in the Aude department of the region it’s largest commune in the department but isn’t the capital, that honour going to Carcassonne. The local language spoken is French and the local currency is the Euro.

With a population of just over 50,000 it used to be a major French port due to its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, however that changed in the 14th century when it the course of the Aude River was changed and made navigation to the town harder. This sudden change in the town’s fortunes because of this can be seen at the back of Narbonne Cathedral. Whilst the town was still an important port the back of Narbonne Cathedral was being improved in an ambitious building programme. This was never completed and can still be seen unfinished.

Other attractions in the town include The Halles, which is a covered market that operates daily, the Canal de la Robine, which runs through the centre of the town and is a beautiful sight, and the town’s rugby team, RC Narbonne, who play in the French second division and were founded in 1907.

The climate in Narbonne is Mediterranean, as expected for a town in the south of France. The winters are mild and slightly wet, where as the summer are very warm and dry, hitting temperatures as high as 30C. The wind from the Mediterranean also means that the region can become very humid in the summer and late spring so it’s advisable to wear light clothing during those months.
