Washington Dulles International Airport is located in the town of Sterling in Virginia, around 20 miles west of the city of Washington on the far side of the Potomac River. The airport was opened in 1962,and has grown into one of the largest and busiest passenger airports in the whole of North America. It is a major hub for United Airlines, and thanks to its status as the capital airport of the USA, flights are available to Washington Dulles Airport from almost all major Internationalcities.
The city of Washington DC itself is a large and sprawling area with many areas that are connected via a comprehensive road network. As with many large US cities, there is public transport, but the coverage is limited to the main tourist and residential areas of the city, which means that to see many of the main business areas you either need to rely on expensive cabs or arrange car hire in Washington DC. You should always book your rental car in advance of travel to Washington, as it is a busy city, and if you delay in booking you might miss out on the right vehicle.
There are 4 main concourses at Dulles Airport where passengers enter the building after a flight, but once inside the airport, there is only a single Terminal building where all of the car rental companies are located. Once you have passed through the arrival, baggage reclaim area and customs, you can collect your car from one of the desks in the ground floor of main hall of the airport. Car hire at Washington Dulles is available from Alamo, Avis, Budget , Dollar, National, Enterprise , Thrifty and Hertz.
From the centre of Washington DC, you should follow the signs for Arlington National Memorial and the airport out of the city along the I-1 over the Potomac Bridge. Once in Virginia, you should join Route 66 as far as Westhampton where you join the I-267 airport road. Follow this road for approximately 7 miles to the Terminal entrance.
