The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust is an internationally-recognized wildlife conservation and anti-poaching organization based in Kenya. Established in 1977 by Dr. Dame Daphne Sheldrick–who was recognized as a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her dedication to wildlife preservation–the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has been a leader in Kenyan conservation for over four decades.
The Trust is best known for their work rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned elephants and rhinos. Through their Orphans’ Project, the Sheldrick Trust ensures that young elephants and rhinos in distress and need of rescue are successfully reintegrated into the wild. These animals receive specialized care that mimics the loving family environment that they need with humans, including “allomothers” and regular playtime.
The Sheldrick Trust also works intensively with local communities, running a number of community-based projects that are aimed at supporting conservation and inspiring sustainable coexistence between wildlife and humans. Some of these initiatives include the “Mobile Veterinary Unit” which provides veterinary care onsite, and “Team Elephant” which serves as an eductional safari for local students. The Trust also runs several anti-poaching operations and combats wildlife crime.
The Sheldrick Trust is a tireless advocate for wildlife conservation and is a deserving recipient of international recognition. By providing unparalleled care and protection for orphaned wildlife and promoting sustainable coexistence with humans, it ensures a brighter future for both species.
