The Xian Great Mosque is a marvel of Chinese Islamic architecture in Xian, Shaanxi Province. It is the largest and oldest mosque in the world that has been in continuous use since the 7th century. The Mosque was originally built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and was later renovated in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It is a great example of the cooperation between Islam and Chinese culture, as the mosque shows a blend of Islamic and Chinese architectural styles.
Xian's Great Mosque stands out with its majestic entrance composed of two towers and a high wall. Inside this wall lies a large open courtyard. At the center of the courtyard stands a magnificent 43 meter tall prayer hall. The prayer hall is ornately decorated and is flanked by two nicely carved pavilions. Around it are several more halls and pavilions, each dedicated to a different use such as Arabic studies and prayer.
Apart from its impressive architecture, the Xian Great Mosque is also known for its vast collection of Islamic scriptures and artifacts. Inside the halls and pavilions are a number of artifacts from the seven centuries of Islamic presence in Xian. A few of these artifacts are available for public viewing at the Islamic Art Exhibition. The exhibition is a great experience for anyone interested in Islamic culture.
The Xian Great Mosque is a fascinating destination for visitors interested in learning about Islamic culture and architecture. Here, one can explore the various halls and pavilions, see a collection of Islamic artifacts and scriptures, and even attend services held in Arabic. The Xian Great Mosque is a must-see destination for those looking to appreciate the growing influence of Islamic culture in China.
