Baku Old City, or Icherisheher, is a historical and architectural complex located in the capital of Azerbaijan, Baku. It is surrounded by a centuries-old fortress wall. The city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as it contains a number of monuments from ancient times to the 19th century.

The Old City stands at the intersection of two seas. It is curved from the sea and split into two parts. Its old quarter is framed by these two seas, the Caspian Sea, and the New Sea. The walls of the city were the first ones in the world to be built in stone, as said by one of the famous travelers of Europe, Marco Polo.
In the 1500s, Icherisheher became the official and permanent residence of the Shirvanshah dynasty. You can still see a number of mausoleums from that era, the oldest of them is the Maiden’s Tower which dates back to the 12th century.
The Caravanserai, also known as Taza Khana, is another part of the Icherisheher complex. A caravanserai is a place where traders used to stay and get shelter and in the 1980s the place was renovated and turned into a museum. The famous Shirvanshah’s palace is another tourist attraction in Icherisheher.
