Abano Terme is a small town only 21 square kilometres big with just under 20,000 people living in it just off the coast in the province of Padua, Italy. It is situated on the slopes of the picturesque eastern slopes of the Colli Euganei. The town is known for its hot springs and mud baths which form the backbone of the economy generated in the town.
These hot springs can reach temperatures close to 80 degrees centigrade. They were harnessed as public baths by the Romans. Known as Aponi Fons, in the 6th century they were destroyed by the Lombards, but soon after rebuilt and enlarged in the 12th century when they became an autonomous commune.
These hot springs and mud baths are one of a few different sights that bring tourists to the small town which is rich with history and the architecture on display today reflects this today. Many of the old building have been destroyed but in their place, newer ones have been constructed. Evidence of this can be seen at the Abano Cathedral of St. Lawrence. The first church was built close to the end of the 9th century but the current church was constructed in 1780. Parts of the very original bell tower still exist today.
Also in the town is the Montirone Gallery which contains words of Il Moretto, Guido Reni and Giandeomenico Tieopolo amongst others. The Sanctuary of the Madonna della Salute also lies on the site where the Madonna first appeared to Pietro Falco and healed him of his wounds. It was built using the Latin cross plan with a nave and two aisles. On the outskirts of the city you?ll find San Daniele Abbey built in the 11th century by Benedictine monks. The current building was completed in 1550. It is well known for the four cloister complex and renaissance style interior as well as a marble portal, added in 1548.
