Overview

Truly unique on a global scale, Nowa Huta is a one-of-a-kind district that was supposed to be a self-sufficient, utopian socialist city. Built in the 1950s on Stalin’s order, Nowa Huta was entirely constructed by workers for workers brought from neighbouring villages to work in the heavy industry. If you think that industrial condominium is anything but beautiful, you are deeply mistaken. Putting to work the best architects and gardeners of the 1950s, the founders took no shortcuts when executing the construction. The facilities were modelled on American superblocks, with a touch of French baroque and a visible inclination towards arches and cornices.

More than the architecture, it is the atmosphere of the district that makes this a unique place. You cannot resist the feeling that time stopped here a few decades ago. Restaurants still serves vodka accompanied by a bite of herring or tartare. Old-school neon lights reminiscent of the 60s and 70s invite you to the nearby shops.
