Tour Details

    Overview

This tour focuses on the exploration of the two primary archaeological sites in the area: Pompeii and Herculaneum, which were both ancient Roman cities destroyed by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. Having been highly esteemed by the Roman Empire, they had reached their social and economic apex immediately before the occurrence of such tragedy. The distinction between these two places is that while Pompeii was a bustling city acting as a conduit for merchants and travelers, Herculaneum was more of an aristocratic residential village populated by intellectuals.

    Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product:

Stop At: Pompeii Archaeological Park, Porta Marina (via Villa dei Misteri), 80045 Pompeii Italy

At the time of its legendary eruption, Pompeii boasted approximately 11.000 inhabitants while Herculaneum had around 5.000 people. Several emperors and aristocrats had holiday villas in these cities back then. One day, in 79 AD, metres of ashes blanketed the area quickly within hours. Centuries later, under the Bourbons government in 1748, excavation works began to uncover what was hidden beneath. The discovery was met with great enthusiasm as it added wealth to the kingdom and was also one of the inspirations behind neoclassicism in Europe. Nowadays, ruins of Pompeii are among the most visited archaeological sites globally while Herculaneum is renowned for its Villa dei Papiri containing a library of over 1.800 papyruses.
The tour includes only round trip transportation to both sites.
