Overview

This tour focuses on the visit to two of the most significant archaeological sites in the region: Pompeii and Herculaneum, ancient Roman cities destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius' eruption in 79 AD. At that time, they were at their highest point in terms of social and economic activity for the Roman Empire. The main difference between them is that Pompeii was a vibrant city which served as an entryway for merchants and travelers, while Herculaneum was basically a residential area occupied by aristocrats and intellectuals. Lunch will be provided at a local restaurant (drinks not included). In the afternoon, you will proceed to Herculaneum's ruins.

At the time of its dramatic eruption, around 11.000 people lived in Pompeii and about 5.000 in Herculaneum. Several Emperors and aristocrats had their holiday villas there. In 79 AD, the cities were buried under meters of ash within hours. Centuries later, excavation works started under the Bourbons government; these revealed great wealth to the kingdom and inspired neoclassicism movement across Europe. Nowadays, Pompeii is amongst the most visited archaeological sites worldwide while Herculaneum features Villa dei Papiri with an impressive library of over 1800 papyruses.

You will get to explore these ruins (approx 2 hrs) and if time allows also a coral & cameos factory to observe local artisans at work.
