Buena Vista was initially named Mahonville after James and Martha Mahon, who left many descendants. In 1879 the citizens voted to rename the town Buena Vista using the name suggested by Alsina Deerhammer. Buena Vista is known for its Collegiate Peaks Wilderness Area and several attraction sites: Browns Canyon Rafting, Wilderness aware rafting, Buena Vista Heritage Museum, and Buena Vista Whitewater Park, River Park Road, and several others.
