The Incan Sacred Valley, also known as the Urubamba Valley, is a valley in Peru's Andes that is 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Cusco, the Inca capital. It is found in the modern Peruvian region of Cusco. It was known as the "Valley of Yucay" in colonial documents. Between 1000 and 1400 CE, the Sacred Valley was gradually absorbed into the nascent Inca Empire. The Sacred Valley is a popular tourist attraction in Peru. Machu Picchu, Peru's most famous archaeological monument, was visited by 1.2 million tourists in 2013, including 800,000 non-Peruvians. Many of the same tourists went to the Sacred Valley's other archaeological sites and modern communities. The Urubamba River irrigates this rich valley, which stretches from Pisac to Ollantaytambo. The Chanapata civilization began to utilise this area around 800 BCE because of the fertile soil for agriculture. From 500 to 900 CE, the Qotacalla civilization flourished in the Sacred Valley. From 900 CE to 1420 CE, the Killke culture existed in the Sacred Valley before being conquered by the Incan Empire. Until the arrival of the Spanish, the Incan Empire governed this region. The city's modern parks with interesting activities and exhibits, such as Machu Picchu theme park and others, may be explored in theme parks and amusement.
