In the western San Juan Mountains, the former silver mining camp of Telluride serves as the county seat of San Miguel County in the U.S. state of Colorado. Telluride was founded in 1878 and was named Columbia but this was consequently changed due to the ambiguous name with another town in the country. It was renamed Telluride in 1887 because of the gold telluride deposits found in parts of the town.
