Avallon is located in central Burgundy in France in the Yonne department and has a population of roughly 7500 Avallonnnais ? the name given to the inhabitants. The town, a fortified one, is sandwiched between two ravines and one can look across to the cousin valley. The town is a calm market town and is surrounded by a number of villages and towns such as Pontaubert, Sauvigny, Etaule and Anneot. Avallon is a British word meaning apple and the town is sometimes referred to as the ?Island of Apples?.
The town is rich in tradition and full of mystery. The Beothuk Indians and Europeans are some of the outstanding players in the town?s history and they began occupying the town in 1621. The town was an essential village as it was a main crossroad linking the Mediterranean Sea to Northern Europe. The town has great monuments such as the Saint-Lazare church which was constructed in the 12th century in order to accommodate the large number of pilgrims coming to see Lazarus? relics. The church has Romanesque architecture with richly decorated and great doors. There is also the clock tower also referred to as tour de l?horloge that was built in the 15th century. The tower has a campanile and stands at 49m tall and is held up by an archway called Bouchoise.
Other monuments that are quite attractive include the town hall, the place Saint-Julien as well as the town?s hospital. The town has several cultural events that are held all year round in different parts of the town such as the music, exhibition and others. The town has two museums i.e. the Musee de l?avallonnais and musee du costume that make the place enjoyable. The town?s set up of lakes, green fields and rivers allows people to relax and practice outdoor activities such as horse riding, swimming, mountain biking, balloon flights etc.
