The capital of the Badajoz province, Badajoz is located in the Spanish autonomous community known as Extremadura. The city is located near the border of Portugal, which makes it ideal for travel into the country.

The climate of the city varies greatly from summer to winter, with drastic changes in temperature. The average high from December through February is 13 through 14 degrees Celsius. March through May sees milder temperatures with average temperatures reaching from 17 to 24 degrees Celsius. June through August is the hottest months of the year with highs from 30 to 34 degrees Celsius. The temperatures become milder again from September through November with the averages ranging from 17 to 27 degrees Celsius.

There are several main sites worth visiting when in the city of Badajoz. The Alcazaba is a Moorish citadel that was built during the ninth century. The citadel was remade during the twelfth century by the Almohads.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist  has a fortress type appearance, including bastions as well as strong walls. The towers of the cathedral are 14 meters tall and 11 meters on each of the sides. The marble portal of the church was built in 1619.

Some of the other sites to see in Badajoz include La Giralda, which is a replica of the one that is located in Seville and the Jardines de la Galera, which offers spectacular views. Some of the museums located in the city include the Iberoamericano of Contemporary Art and the Museo Extremeno.

Travelling around the city will require a car. The Badajoz airport is located approximately 14 kilometres from the centre of the city in the municipal area of the district of Badajoz.
