Detroit is an absolutely huge city in the state of Michigan.  It is renowned for a number of things, among them rock music, Motown and modern techno music.  The city is also full of some fantastic museums and historical sites which go contrast (albeit well) with the modernity of the city in general.  With so much to see and do in the city, you could spend weeks here and not be bored!

The climate in Detroit varies and the city really does experience both extremes.  Summers are hot and muggy with thunderstorms not uncommon, especially during the afternoons whilst winters can be very cold with temperatures hovering around freezing.  Detroit does experience snowfall but in general it does not settle.  Many tourists find the spring and the autumn the best times to visit due to the milder climate.

Things to See and Do

There are so many things to see and do in Detroit that it would be impossible to list them all here.  So instead here are a few of the main attractions:

  • The three casinos – Greektown, Motor City and MGM
  • Greektown – one of the most famous neighbourhoods
  • The live music venues – there are A LOT
  • Grand Circus Park

Getting Around

Tourists have a few options when it comes to getting around Detroit.  Due to the vast layout of the city, many people find it is not a good idea to explore on foot and so instead use the elevated rail.  Buses are also available but not recommended due to their safety.  The best way by far to get around the city is by car.  There are a number of car hire companies offering car hire Detroit and you can use the search facilities to compare their prices and book online.  Parking is cheap in the city and driving is extremely easy.
