Crime in Guatemala

Out of all the Latin American countries, Guatemala has one of the highest rates of violent crime. There are approximately 40 murders each week inĀ Guatemala City. Most of these crimes involve the gangs. However, the incidents are indiscriminate and may occur in tourist areas as well. There are no areas in Guatemala that are considered safe areas, even Zona Viva or Zone 10 that is popular with foreign residents and tourists. There were three people shot at a restaurant in zone 10 in 2010 and even with an increased police force in the area, the risk of violent attacks is still high.

Violent Crimes in Guatemala

All throughout the country the risk of violent attacks on tourists, including; murder, kidnapping, rape, carjacking, assault, and armed robbery, have all been on the rise in the past few months. These crimes can occur anywhere and during any part of the day. These crimes typically involve guns and the arrest and conviction rate of the perpetrators is relatively low. You need to take your personal security very seriously when travelling through the country and remain aware of your surroundings all the time.

The risk of violent crime occurring is very real and foreign travellers and tourists are at a high risk of becoming victims. There are a number of these crimes that occur when travelling to popular tourist destinations such as Tikal, Angigua, Lake Atilan, and Peten. Tourists have reported being attacked on the minor roads that are around Lake Atitlan.

Mountain Climbing

There have been tourists that have been attacked while climbing mountains in the area. It is recommended that while travelling in Guatemala you avoid climbing Tajumulco volcano located in San Marcos. The surrounding area should be avoided as well. Currently, there is extreme unrest in the local communities that surround this area. If you wish to climb mountains stick to Acatenango, Pacaya, Tacana, Agua, Fuego and Santiaguito. Only climb with a professional group and never climb the volcanoes during the night.

Driving through Guatemala

If you are planning on crossing the border, it is crucial that you only cross at designated areas in order to remain safe.
