Leon is located in the northwest part of Spain and is the capital of the province of the same name. The city was founded around 29 BC by the Romans and was used as a military encampment. Today, the city of Leon offers many historical places to visit.

The Rayonnant gothic Cathedral located in Leon offers a view of some of the most glorious windows made out stained glass. Another historical place to visit in the city is the Basilica of San Ididoro. The Basilisca offers several fantastic Romanesque paintings as well as the tombs of Kings of Leon.

Other places of interest in the city include the Palacio Del Conde Luna, from the 14th century, the Barro Humedo, where partying and drinking is done, and the Church of San Juan and San Pedro.

In the older quarter of Leon, there are large parts of the medieval wall that surrounded the city still remaining. There are also parts of the original Roman wall.

One of the newer museums in the city is the MUSAC. The museum is a contemporary art museum that opened in 2005. The museum was designed by Mansilla Tunon. In 2007, the museum received the European Union Prize of Contemporary Architecture.

When visiting the city of Leon, expect a warm Mediterranean climate. The temperatures during the winter are typically anywhere from 1 to 16 degrees Celsius. Frost commonly occurs during the winter months, but snowfall is rare and extremely sporadic. During the spring, the temperatures average from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius. The summers in the city are hot and dry with temperatures averaging from 21 to 37 degrees Celsius. There is an abundant amount of sunshine in the city throughout the year.

The Leon airport services the city and is located about six kilometres from the centre part of downtown Leon. When travelling to Leon, it is a good idea to consider car hire in Leon airport to ensure you have a way to get to all the sites that you want to see.
