The capital of Spain, Madrid is also the biggest city in the country. Madrid falls behind only Berlin and London as the largest city in the European Union. Madrid is located in the centre of Spain on the Manzanares River.

The area of Madrid tends to have a Continental Mediterranean climate. The altitude of the city means that the winters are cold and include sporadic snowfall. The summers tend to be quite hot, with temperatures rising above 30 degrees Celsius. The spring and the fall see the most precipitation in the city.

Madrid remains a popular tourist city due to the large number of cultural attractions the city has to offer. The Golden Triangle of Art is located on the Paseo del Prado. There are three museums in this area. The Prado Museum is the most famous museum of the three. It features some of the top collections of European style art. The Thyssen Bornemisza Museum and the Reina Sofia Museum are located in this area as well.

Juan Carlos 1 of Spain uses the Royal Palace of Madrid for official acts, and it is listed as his residence. The palace is full of artworks and is one of the biggest royal palaces in the whole of Europe. There are many wonderful rooms as well as a significant collection of armours.

The city is home to the football club, Real Madrid. They are an extremely prestigious club winning an abundance of titles and the champions league three times. They were also selected as the number one team of the 20th century by none other than FIFA. Additionally, the city has two five-star stadiums, and is one of only four cities throughout Europe that does.

Along with great cultural and sporting venues, Madrid offers visitors unique architecture, cathedrals and churches, as well as a large shopping scene, which is often cited as one of the best in Europe.

Travelling through the city is easy when you take advantage of car hire in Madrid Airport. However, you can also use the public transport system, which includes a tram.
