Pontevedra

PontevedraPontevedra is located just northwest of the Iberian Peninsula in Spain. The city is the capital of the province of the same name. The name of the city comes from the Latin words for bridge (pons) and old or established (veter). The name refers to the old bridge of Roman descent that crosses the Lerez River.

 

The city of Pontevedra offers an oceanic climate that is very humid. The temperatures in the city are fairly mild, especially considering its location, which is quite far north in Spain. The mean daily temperature for the year is 15 degrees Celsius. January is the coldest month with an average temperature of 9.5 degrees Celsius. The hottest month of the year is July with temperatures averaging 20.5 degrees Celsius.

 

The city of Pontevedra is a medieval port and an ancient town, with many sights for visitors to look around. The Pilgrim Chapel is located in Praz da Pergrina. The Zona Monumental or old city offers several attractions as well including the Praza de Lena and the Alameda. There are also many public squares and parks that are wonderful for strolling through. This makes holidaying in Pontevedra ideal for those who enjoy walking.

 

As the city of Pontevedra is a port city, the Salas Naval Museum offers a look at the history of the city. The museum includes memorabilia collected throughout the ages. The Torres Arcebispais Interpretation Center shows a newer vision of the city by allowing the public to learn about the history of the city through one of its landmarks, the Santa Maria Maggiore church and the medieval bridge.

 

The city of Pontevedra is served by many airports. However, the largest one is Leon Airport, which is about 245 kilometres from the centre of the city. If you are planning a visit to Pontevedra, consider car hire at Leon Airport, especially since the airport is quite a distance from the city.
