Residing right next to the Arabian sea, the Gateway of India is an incredibly important symbol of hope and independence within Mumbai.

The Gateway symbolises the last point where the British troops departed from once India had gained independence so it’s safe to say that it’s an incredibly meaningful place in the city.

The best part of the Gateway of India is that it’s completely free to visit so you can spend as little or as long as you want admiring the impressive feat of architecture.

If you’ve travelled a lot, you may recognise the influences of Indonesian, Islamic and even Roman on the Gateway of India.

The area around the Gateway can tend to get pretty busy during the day, but it’s still worth a visit to see such a bold piece of architecture.

Construction began on the Haji Ali Mosque all the way back in 1431 and since then it’s been a pivotal religious monument within Mumbai.

The white marbled dargah, also known as a shrine, is in pristine condition and is a beautiful religious building to admire while in Mumbai.

For those interested in history and art, you’re sure to enjoy a visit to Haji Ali, however it’s probably not something that children would find overly fascinating so perhaps just pay a quick visit if you’re travelling with young kids.

The Afghan Church in Mumbai was built by the British as a memorial to remember the fallen soldiers who died in the First Anglo-Afghan War.

It’s a place in Mumbai that’s definitely worth a visit if you’re interested in history and politics of war and is also a great place to pay your respects to the fallen soldiers.

The church is kitted out with some truly spectacular architectural work such as beautiful stained-glass windows and a 60-metre high tower and spire.

Located in the Colaba district, the Afghan Church is a respectful and beautiful place to visit in Mumbai and you can do so for free.
