Agaete is a city in the Las Palma province on the Canary Islands in Spain. Agaete is around 45 square kilometers and has a population of just 5500 people living within the city limits. Ageate was historically a good place to view the El Dedo de Dios which is a natural monument on the coastline before it was destroyed in 2005 by a tropical storm. It is situated just 30 kilometers from the island?s capital, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
This postcard-perfect town is well situated - it stands in the mouth of Valle de Agaete. Almost all the buildings mirror the style of the laid back island town, with whitewashed walls, red roofs and blue shutters. This lends to making the town very calm and relaxed and that is noticeable in the people that live there.
Throughout the town there are remnants of times gone by. A great example of this is Iglesia de la Concepcion, a church built in 1874 distinguished by its enormous size, built from elements of red stone decorated with ornaments of white. Other notable buildings are Ermita de San Sebastian another church situated directly to in the entrance to Agaete. Another church is the Emita de Nuestra Senora de Las Nieves . This is a 400 year old historic chapel. The Cueva de las Cruces is located about 2km from the city. There are chambers open to the public where you can see the crosses engraved on the chamber walls.
Visitors used to come to Ageate to look out along the coastline to see the magnificent El Dedo de Dios, a rocky spire on the water ? translated it means ?The Finger of God? due to its shape. As mentioned, this was destroyed during a storm named Tropical Storm Delta. The rock is still visible but it holds not nearly the magnificence it once had.
