Beziers has been inhabited since the Neolithic era before the raid of the Celts, and was later occupied by the Romans around 36BC. Though the town was completely damaged during the various wars that took place, the town was rehabilitated into a great destination for tourists and today, the town is a primary center of most wine making industries in Languedoc. The town has very interesting streets on the north and west that suit the shopping needs of visitors.

St Nazaire Cathedral located on the high side of the town, is one place to visit. The cathedral occupies a pleasing site that can be located from far away, and is a remarkable Gothic structure built in the 14th century. Beziers has two arenas that host a variety of concerts and bullfighting festivals each year in the month of August. One of the arenas has been there since the Roman era while the other was constructed in 1905 and is larger than the former. St Madeleine?s Church is yet another beautiful site that has retained its Romanesque aspect despite some of the other buildings that have been built around it.

There is also the amphitheatre that was built under the Roman Empire and held 13,700 spectators though the general public can only access it when visiting it on guided tours. The Plateau des Poetes is another popular site built in the second half of the 19th century and is named after a monk who lived in the town in the 13th century. It contains several statues of famous poets and an enormous fountain of the Titan. Other sites include the canal du midi, the canal bridge and the Fonserannes Locks. There is in addition the Malpas tunnel which is 170 meters long constructed in 1679 though it?s said that it has a high risk of collapsing.
