Le Mans is a French city in the Sarthe department of the Pays de la Loire region. Located in the north of France the city has a population of around 150,000 and is the capital of the historic French province of Maine. The city is notable for being the birthplace of Henry II of England, in 1133. The local language spoken is French and the currency of the country is the Euro.
The city is well known for its motorsports, with two racing tracks in the city. The Bugatti Circuit, which is permanent and the smaller of the two, and the Circuit de la Sarthe, which is made up of a mixture public and private roads and has been host to the 24 Hours of Le Mans race since 1923. This endurance race is the oldest of its kind and requires a large team if you are to compete, including three drivers.
Another attraction in the city is the old town, called Viexu Mans, which is made up of cobbled streets and timber house fronts are very pleasing on the eye. Near here is the Cathedrale St-Julien, which is dedicated to St Julian of Le Mans, the city’s first bishop. Built at different points in history, the current building dates back to as far as the 12th century.
The weather in Le Mans is like much of northern France, with warm summers and mild to cool winters. Rainfall is dispersed throughout the year with the most falling in the winter months. The average temperature in the summer is around 24C, with the hottest month of the year being August. In the winter the temperature drops and sometimes there is even snowfall.
