Car Hire JFK Airport

General Information & Tips on Car Hire

New York JFK is one of the most important airports in the world and the busiest airport in the United States. It saw over 53 million passengers pass through it in 2014. The airport lies 12 miles south-east of Lower Manhattan and is the biggest of New York’s airports. As well as access to the city with a hire car, you could also explore the surrounding areas. The airport has a total of six passenger terminals, with four runways. It first opened in 1948 as New York International Airport, but was popularly known as Idlewild after the golf course it replaced. The airport was renamed shortly after the 1963 assassination of JFK. The terminals are numbered 1 to 8, but 3 and 6 are missing, having been demolished in recent years. Each plays host to a multitude of airlines, with almost 100 using the airport as a whole, from over 50 countries. Due to the range in ages of terminals they feature different designs but all have a plethora of shops, restaurants, bars, exchange facilities, and information points.

Many information points are to be found at Frankfurt Airport. In Terminal 1, they are at B Concourse, Level 2 in the departures and arrivals areas, as well as in the Transit area. In Terminal 2, an information point is between Concourses D and E.

Usefull Information

There are information booths handily located on the arrivals levels of all terminals, where you can obtain details about flights and other services throughout the airport.

How do I hire a car?

The first thing to do when collecting any rental car is to check it over for any damage and make sure this is documented by the hire company. Otherwise, they could charge you for the damage at a later date. You should return the vehicle with the same level of fuel as when you received it. If you do not, you might find yourself with a bill which will be at a higher cost than the fuel itself.

It’s imperative to understand the road laws of your destination (which vary from state to state, so read up on these depending on how far you’re going). Always drive responsibly just like you would at home, so naturally don’t drink and drive, use a phone behind the wheel or drive tired.

JFK is used by six of the world’s top car hire providers, and all have operations in each of the terminals’ arrival levels. Most have a courtesy telephone. You will find your vehicle at the rental car lot, which you can reach via the AirTrain. Although you can book on the spot, it’s much more economical to book in advance online and it will save time too.

Driving costs and Potential Destinations

The average price of unleaded gasoline in New York is $0.78 per litre. With a medium-priced vehicle such as the Smart for Two, which gives 67 miles to the gallon, your approximate fuel cost per 10 miles would be $1.17.

Before You Go

There are certain requirements and documents to produce before you can pick up a car. Usually you have to be 21 to hire, although Avis will lease to 18-year-olds and for Hertz you have to be 25. You should show your home country’s Driver’s Licence (along with your passport if the licence doesn’t have a photo) together with your International Driver’s Permit (IDP).

How to Buy Car Insurance

Enquire as to what insurance is included with your car hire – there may not be any third party cover, and if there is, it may only apply in New York State. There is usually a Collision or Loss Damage Waiver, but you should buy some excess insurance separately from a provider such as insurance4carhire.com so you do not have to pay an exorbitant excess in the event of any damage.
